![]() Fog or smoke? The "smoke" is really the breath of the thousands of plants and trees within the Park. The water and hydrocarbons exuded by the leaves produce the "smoke" that gives the mountains their name. About 100 native tree species make their home in Great Smoky Mountains National Park---more than in all of northern Europe. About 95% of the Park is forested, and about 25% of that is old-growth forest. This national park is the most visited one in our system, with about ten million visitors a year.
