![]() A beautiful sight in mid-March. Florida has its orange, and Georgia has its peach. The success of peach farming in Georgia can be attributed somewhat to the abolition of slavery after the Civil War. Farmers were forced to search for alternatives to the traditional labor-intensive cotton crop. The soils of middle and south Georgia proved to be excellent for growing peaches. Franciscan monks introduced peaches to the islands along Georgia's coast in 1571. By the mid-1700s peaches were cultivated by the Cherokee Indians.
