![]() June and July brings a profusion of wildflowers to Yellowstone. These small, mat-forming plants with pretty white flowers are Rocky Mountain Phlox (Phlox multiflora). I photographed them near the bank of the famous, trout-laden Firehole River. Thanks to the foresight on the part of many people about our eventual need for the solace and beauty of wild places, Yellowstone became our first national park in 1872. It led the way for our great system of national parks, wilderness areas and other publicly owned protected natural areas.
