![]() The Yellowstone River, in Yellowstone National Park, WY, plunges over two waterfalls, the Upper Falls (109 feet), and the Lower Falls, pictured here. At 308 feet, the Lower Falls is twice as high as Niagara Falls. Tumbling down Lower Falls, the river continues its course through the 20-mile Yellowstone Canyon, carved by the river to a depth of 1500 feet in places. Native Americans named this place Yellowstone because of the color of the rocky walls of the canyon.
