![]() I was intrigued by the relationship of these two palms I discovered on the beach at St. George Sound, Franklin Co., FL. The scene reminded me that everyone needs someone to lean on at certain times in their lives. These sabal palms are Florida's state tree, and are plentiful throughout most of the state. They're also known as cabbage palms: the cylindrical shaped bud located near the treetop is edible. As a child growing up in rural Florida, I remember that the small trees in swamp areas were sometimes harvested for 'swamp cabbage.' Today, it's a delicacy called 'heart of palm' and is sold in gourmet sections of grocery stores. ![]()
